Monroe Police are investigating the scam which was reported on Sunday, Oct. 27, after the man received the demand for money, said Lt. Stephen Corrone.
Corrone said the man had been talking with the woman online for quite some time and had at one time sent her two $100 gift cards.
After the woman received the gift cards, the two exchanged nude photos, Corrone said.
The man then received a screenshot on Facebook of family members, asking him if they were related to him. After confirming they were, the man received a demand from the woman that he send $2,000 or the nude photos would be sent to his family.
Instead of falling for the scam, Corrone said the man came to the department to report the crime.
Tracking down the scammer could be difficult, he added. But, the department has worked on this type of scam before.
"Many times the IP addresses or emails lead to foreign countries, which then, the investigation is out of our hands," Corrone said.
Corrone cautioned others not fall for this type of scam, and to be careful who you share nude or compromising photos with online.
